Remembering the Walk to LZ Ross

When Charlie Company left Chu Lai, I remember a short stop at LZ Baldy. I don't know if we air assaulted or walked out of Baldy, but I do remember gunships flying along our flanks beside a road. We came across a village on the way. I remember walking in one of the hooch’s and a family was about to have lunch. They had small fish with some smelly sauce, they were putting over rice. Being from south Louisiana, I loved rice. I talked the old man of the house into giving me some rice for a can of lima beans: GOOD TRADE!  Now that I think about it the whole family was probably V.C.  We continued on our walk and finally reached LZ. Ross As we walked into the perimeter the marines looked at us in amazement. I later found out why. It seems they couldn't go a 100 yards out the perimeter without getting ambushed. Once the marines left it took a while for the V.C. to feel us out. That turned out to be the only walk around LZ Ross that wasn't bad.
