Lucky for Me, I Caught a Germ

On August 22nd or 23rd 1967, C Company 2/12th Cav, was pulling security for an artillary battery. It was the worst place ever as far as location. The artillary guns were right behind our bunker and out front of our perimeter there was a stream . The local population was gathering small fish and frogs to eat. I decided i would go down and wash up. We all had a pretty bad smell. When I came back up I was told there was hot chow, so I got a plate of it. George Sylvester and I sat on top of our bunker and ate. While we were eating, a small chopper with long poles attached to the skids flew over us spraying what I thought some sort of mosquito spray. Mosquito spraying from aircraft was common in south Louisiana.  George told me that it was Agent Orange, of course I didn't know what that was. Later that day i started running a high fever. The company medic ordered me on a chopper to LZ Uplift. I protested but went anyway. That night Uplift was mortared. The next morning I got to see something that most people in Vietnam didn't get to see.  I saw Miss America and her group. I was told they named the hill or area where the mortar fire came from after her. Don't know what her name was but she sure was pretty.
