Camouflage

Charlie Company, 2/12th, was sent to the Kontum/Dak To area of operations in 1967. I remember the area as having the thickest jungle I had ever been in since I had arrived in country. I think we all had machetes, even our rear guard. This particular day one of our short timers, Charles DeGrey, was rear security. George Sylvester and myself were just a little way ahead of him. We were FNG's.  On the trail was a tree we all had to step over.  George and I made it over then there was one heck of a ruckus. A VC came out from under the tree.  DeGrey butted him with his M-16 and got him under control.  All of Charlie Company had walked over this guy. Our prisoner was well camouflaged in the tree. I was glad to leave that area, but that’s when we moved to the Que San valley.  The 4th infantry took over for us in the Kontum/Dak To area, and we all know what happened.
