Captain Gene Fox, Commanding Officer
A Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry
Butch North

I was one of the very fortunate troopers to have served under Captain. Gene Fox. A retired Command Sergeant Major, Norman Weifenbach, and I believe that he is the finest officer that we ever served under. He was trained at the Army Academy at  West Point. He came to Company A ( co. A 2/12) just prior to the battle at the hospital. Shortly after that battle, the battle at the Ia Drang began.

The best order that I ever received, was when we were on a company  patrol. The lead platoon thought they had met some of the enemy. The c.o. said, prepare yourselves for combat.

As all of you know, officers, and enlisted don't mix. Today, I rank Colonel " Retired" Fox, as one of my closest friends. He was always a tough, fair, and good commander. He never asked his men, to do more, than he would do. You know something, Company A, was blessed with some pretty good platoon leaders also. I think that Captain Fox  had a lot to do with that.

I can only hope that all of you had as good of a commander as I did.
