REQUEST FOR INFORMATION
Recently Roger King, our long time Treasurer of the 12th Cavalry Regiment Association, resigned his position due to health reasons.
All of us owe Roger a big “Thank You!” for his dedication and service through the years to our Association.
Our leadership has asked
me to take over the position of Treasurer on an interim basis, until we can find someone who will do us a good job. The books were
audited recently and everything has been transferred to me. We have only one problem. Some of the names of those who have sent in
their dues and those who gave their dues at some of our recent reunions did not post to our database. The money was deposited, but
in some cases, we don’t know who sent in their money. This could include new members who have joined recently.
If you, or if you know someone who has paid their dues, see that the expiration date on your membership on the mailing labels for
the Membership Directory or the Crossed Sabers Newsletter (which will go out this month), don’t match what it should be, get in
contact with me at (405) 826-8008 or by email at dougwarden444@hotmail.com. I’ll see to
it that your expiration date gets corrected
and see to it that this doesn’t happen again. Also, if there are veterans of the 12th Cavalry who can’t afford the dues ($10 per year)
who read this, please contact me and we’ll see to it that we take care of your membership. Thanks to all of you for your support of
our Association.

SENATOR TOM UDALL OF NEW MEXICO PINS THE SILVER STAR MEDAL ON PERRY BENALLY
September 9, 2011, Gallup, New Mexico

More than 40 years ago, 21-year-old Perry Benally had a day few of us will ever experience. While on patrol in
South Vietnam on December 15, 1967, Perry's platoon took fire. Six of his fellow soldiers were killed. Benally was
wounded twice by shrapnel, in the leg and chest. He later sustained a bullet strike to the temple. Looking out for his
fellow soldiers, Benally provided fire, despite his injuries, to help medics in the area taking fire until he ran out
of ammunition. Benally made it to a graveyard and having no more ammunition, he used his spent rifle to kill two North
Vietnamese Army soldiers trying to take him prisoner. Perry Benally survived through the night and was finally rescued
in the morning - that day was his 22nd birthday.
He was awarded the Silver Star for his actions in South Vietnam in 1967 after missing paperwork relegated his experience
to anonymity.
It was Charlie Company GIs there that day who played a key role in making sure the oversight was
corrected. They were still looking out for their fellow soldier - 44 years later. In attendance were Terry Combs,
President of the 12th Cavalry Regiment Association and former member of B Company, 1st/12th Cavalry, Thomas Crabtree,
former member of C Company, 1st/12th Cavalry, Rich Valles, former member of C Company, 1st/12th Cavalry and Doug Warden,
former member of C Company, 1st/12th Cavalry.
