To the members of Charlie Company, 12th Cavalry My name is Jack Choppa and I am the older brother of Richard "Doc" Choppa who was a Medic attached to C Company, 1/12th Cavalry and died in Vietnam on December 15, 1967 in Binh Dinh Province. When Richard died, I did not handle his death well and avoided communication with those who served with him. The passage of time, however, has taught me that Richard served his country well, and in my mind he is a true American hero. I am very proud of my little brother. I would be honored if any of you who knew Richard would share with me any recollections you have of him, the good and the sad, including how he lost his life." I wish to hear from all who knew my brother; the in-country for recollections of him – the good, the bad, the sad and glad, to include any information on his death. My address is:

Sir,
On February 27, 1969 the 1st platoon of Company B, 1/12th
Cavalry led by LT Stephan Ford encountered enemy forces and engaged
in a 4 hour battle. This platoon was caught in nearly open terrain
and took cover in bomb craters. Of the 20 men in the fight, 11 were
WIA and 1 was KIA. The platoon medic, SP4 Doc Hoogasian exposed himself to
fire on at least 3 occasions to pull the wounded to safety.
I
am trying to locate others involved in this action to get an
eye witness statement to help the medic obtain a commendation.
The Platoon Leader, Stephan Ford has already contacted our office but
I need an additional witness to these events. Any
help is appreciated, especially any leads of possible witnesses who
were involved.
If you are willing to help or knows someone who can please call me

My name is Victor M Freilich Jr.; I was a rifleman with A Company 1St of the 12th form April 1966 to April 1967. I was wounded in May of 1966 and was on light duty in the rear area for awhile.
During my stay at the rear I walked into the Company CP where Lt Rosario, the XO was working out with a set of spring bands that you stretch across your body. As I entered and walked pass Lt. Rosario the spring device broke and his hand with the handle in it struck me in the neck with such force it knocked me down. Lt Rosario sent me to the Battalion Aid Station where I spent the night and was fitted with a neck brace to wear for a few days. Lt Rosario has sent me an affidavit to this exact statement. Additionally, two other friends with A Company have also sent me affidavits to this exact incident collaborating that an injury did occur while in Vietnam and that I had gone to the Battalion Aid Station.
Over the years I have had nothing but problems and have attempted to get a current neck injury dating back to this incident Service Connected. The VA actually did a cervical lamonectomy in the early 80s after following me for many years with a deficit in feeling to my left shoulder and arm. Due to the current technology an MRI was done at the VA showing I have a Syrinx, ( Syringiomyelia) due to trauma that has now caused a charcot joint in my left shoulder requiring complete fusion of my left shoulder in 1985. Now my left wrist and left elbow are also now being diagnosed as charcot joints. My main problem is I am left handed or was. It seems I was denied any Service Connection because there are no records of my being at the Battalion Aid Station. Is there anyway I can find out the names of the Doctors at the 1st of the 12th Aid Station, there around May or June of 1966, to see if some one can confirm my treatment? I remain severely handicapped with little use of my left arm due to the neck injury.

Still looking for guys in
Charlie Co 1/12 Air Cav from 1968/69. Anyone seen Thomas G. Jones
(the poet)? Anyone seen William W Griffin who is
famous for his ball point pen. Or how about Joe DiMartino, the
barber from Chicago? We all are waiting for you guys to say hi and get
back in touch. None of us will bite, promise.
