12th Cavalry Regiment Association

 

 

On Saturday, June 5, 2010 at the annual luncheon meeting of the 12th Cavalry Regiment Association, the following members were newly elected or appointed or re-appointed to the following leadership positions:


  

     President - Terry Combs (Company B, 1/12th Cavalry)

Terry joined the Army on January 25, 1966, went to basic in good old Ft. Polk, La and then AIT at Ft. Gordon, GA.  After that, he volunteered for jump school at Ft. Benning graduating in July, 1966. Then he went back home for 30 days leave with orders to join the 1st Cavalry Division in Vietnam.  Arriving in country on August 16, 1966 he was assigned to the 1/12th Cavalry, Bravo Company, 3rd Platoon, 1st Squad.  Being Airborne, at the latter part of his tour, he was transferred to the Rangers/LRRP, and then later back to 1/12th Cavalry.  After his first tour was over, he extended and was wounded.  Terry spent a total of 15 months, 3 weeks, 5 days in country, trying to get outta that place.   

He has attended five of the annual 1st Cavalry Division Association reunions, and is one of the founding organizers of the 12th Cavalry Regiment reunions in Branson, MO.  This will be the fifth year having it and the reunions are growing in attendance each year.  Terry likes these reunions because they offer more time to socialize within the regiment.

Terry currently lives in Tahlequah, OK and has been married to Della for twelve years.  He has been retired for a few years now, and Della is a student at Northeastern State University getting her degree in Homeland Security.  Terry has one son and three grandchildren.

   


     Vice President - Bob Magruder (Company B and HHC, 2/12th Cavalry)

     Board of Directors - Colonel Morris Goins (HHC, 1/12th Cavalry)

COL Goins was commissioned through the ROTC program in 1985. In addition to the normal operational assignments, he served with the United Nations in the Western Sahara as a UN Military Observer and as Aide-De-Camp to the Commanding Officer of the Military District of Washington. Prior to assuming command of 1/12th Cavalry, he was assigned to the Joint Staff, Deputy Directorate Antiterrorism/Homeland Defense, Antiterrorism/Force Protection (J-3) plans and analysis.

COL Goins was the Battalion Commander of the 1/12th Cavalry from 2005 until 2008 including their deployment to Iraq during 2006-2007.

In June 2009 Colonel Goins will be attending a one year program at the JFK School of Government at Harvard University where he will become a National Security Fellow.


     Board of Directors - Allen Lynch (Company D, 1/12th Cavalry)

Allen served on active duty from November 1964 to April 25, 1969.  He served in Germany from 1965 until he volunteered for service in Vietnam in 1967.  While in Vietnam he served with Company D, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division.  On December 15, 1967 Allen distinguished himself on the battlefield and was awarded the Medal of Honor.  Allen retired from the Illinois Army National Guard as a First Sergeant in 1994. 

Allen has over thirty-five years of experience in Veterans Affairs.  He began his career with the Veterans Administration in 1970.  Allen served twelve years as a Veterans Benefits Counselor at the Chicago VA Regional Office and as the Chief of Ambulatory Care, at the North Chicago VA Hospital. In 1983 Allen left the VA to take a position with the Vietnam Veterans Leadership Program as the Executive Vice President. In 1985, Allen was appointed Chief of the new Veterans Rights Bureau in the Illinois Attorney General’s Office. He served in that position for twenty years before retiring in November 2005.

Allen has a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Care Administration from Southern Illinois University and is the Chief Service Representative for Vietnam Veterans of America, Illinois State Counsel.

Allen lives in Gurnee, Illinois with his wife, Susan.  They have three grown children and three grandchildren.


   Board of Directors - Al Freeland (Company A, 2/12th Cavalry)

Al Freeland entered active duty in Oct 1967 as a 2LT after completing ROTC at Tennessee Tech University. He was commissioned an Armor officer. He arrived in Vietnam in Oct 1968 and was assigned to 1st Platoon, A Company, 2/12th Cavalry. In September 1969, he was assigned to the US Army Armor School at Ft. Knox, KY. He spent the next 4 years on active duty.

Leaving active duty in 1973, he was assigned to the US Army Reserve. During his USAR years he served in various assignments at Ft. Belvoir, VA; Fort Knox, KY; and Washington DC. He retired with the rank of Colonel in 1997. He retired from United States Civil Service in 2004, where he was the Chief of Environmental Management and now works as a contractor with the United States Army Cadet Command at Fort Knox, KY. 

He and his wife Denise reside in Elizabethtown, KY. Their eldest son Tracey lives in Lexington, KY, with his wife Christina and son Nicolas. Their youngest son Wesley, a service member with the US Navy, lives in Cincinnati, Ohio.


      Iraq War Representative - Colonel Tim Ryan (HHC, 2/12th Cavalry)

COL Tim Ryan received his commission as an Armor officer from Western Carolina University 1983. After spending two years as a tank platoon leader in the North Carolina National Guard, he entered on active duty in 1985 and was assigned to Fort Hood, TX.  Over the next two decades of service, he served in various command and staff positions in units throughout the U.S., Germany, Kosovo, and the Middle-East--including tank company command during OPERATION DESERT STORM and as Commander of the 2/12th Cavalry during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM (2004-2005). 

Following command of the 2/12th Cavalry, he served as a strategic planner for the Department of the Army G3 in the Pentagon and is now assigned to the Joint Center for Operational Analysis at U.S. Joint Forces Command in Suffolk, VA.

Tim and his wife Kay have three daughters and reside in Stafford, VA.
