The 2D BATTALION,
12TH CAVALRY, 1ST CAVALRY DIVISION (AIRMOBILE) and its
attached units distinguished themselves by extraordinary heroism in connection
with military operations against an armed hostile force from 7 March 1969 to 11
March 1969 in the defense of Landing Zone Grant, Tay
Ninh Province,
in the Republic
of Vietnam. During this
period, the officers and enlisted men of these units individually,
collectively, at all levels of command, and without exception, performed their
mission with great valor, honor, distinction and a professionalism far beyond
that ordinarily expected from men in sustained combat. Suffering 67 casualties,
including 10 mortally wounded, one of which was the battalion commander, the
battalion continued to inflict heavy casualties on the enemy, who proved to be
extremely well-equipped and determined. Repulsing massive ground, mortar and
rocket attacks on three different occasions at Landing Zone Grant, the 2D
BATTALION, 12TH CAVALRY and its attached units acted as a blocking
force between the Cambodian border and the capital city of Saigon. The extraordinary heroism and
devotion to duty displayed by the members of the 2D BATTALION, 12TH
CAVALRY and its attached units are in keeping with the highest traditions of
the military service and reflect great credit upon themselves, their units, and
the Armed Forces of the United
States.
